The Sol Plaatje University's administration building, which was the former National Institute for Higher Education (NIHE) was renamed Luka Jantjie House during a ceremony in Kimberley on Friday.
The building used to be part of the old Northern Cape Legislature.
Luka Jantjie, born in Kimberley, was a heroic figure who was resistant to British colonialism, and died in the ancestral sanctuary of the Langeberg mountain range.
Students attending the ceremony said they felt a sense of pride for being part of such a historic event and also studying at a university that carries so much history.
In addition, the newly-built campus building was also named the Central Building.
