RSA President Cyril Ramaphosa has called Gender-based violence is South Africa’s second pandemic after the corona virus. GBV reportedly increased dramatically since the government moved the country to lockdown Level 3 on 1 June 2020. Ramaphosa said 21 women and children had been killed in the past few weeks. According to crime statistics released in 2019, 2,930 women were murdered in a 12-month period from 2017 to 2018, amounting to one murder every three hours.

DREAMS Thina Abantu Abasha is an ambitious youth led programme aimed at reducing HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng. The goal of DREAMS TAA is to help girls develop into Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe women.

Growing on the success of the HIGHER HEALTH Future Beats programme, Johnson and Johnson entered into a partnership with HIGHER HEALTH, to broadcast the Dreams Thina Abantu Abasha (DREAMS TAA) initiative through its community and campus radio station network.
The collaboration between HIGHER HEALTH and DTAA involves radio programming through four radio stations namely, Maputaland Community Radio (KZN), Durban Youth Radio (KZN), VOW FM (Gauteng) and Tshwane FM (Gauteng). The aim is to empower AGYW in three key areas, namely, Employability, Leadership and Sexual and Reproductive Health resources.

At the onset of the Corona Virus Pandemic in South Africa when President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a state of disaster in March 2020, Voice of Wits launched an hour long daily talk show, The Covid Report, which focusses on the impact the virus has on various sectors of society. Some of the topics covered include; stories of recovery from people who have been infected with Covid-19, how people living in informal settlement are dealing with the pandemic, the impact of the virus on schooling focusing on home schooling on one show, How students are coping with studying and if the academic year can be saved. The show has also covered the impact in the economy and businesses in general. The LIVE shoe airs 6 and 7pm Monday to Thursday and is available on podcast after that.
