22 Jun – Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu says communities must hold their municipalities accountable. Makwetu released an audit report for the 2015-2016 financial year yesterday, which shows that most municipalities are wasting millions of rands. The Western Cape came out tops again at 80 prcent, with a clean audit with KwaZulu following at a low 18 percent and the Eastern Cape at 16 percent. Only one municipality received a clean audit in Gauteng and that was the Midvaal. Makwetu says communities have to be interested in how their municipalities are run if they are to hold officials responsible. He has also revealed that the office of the AG wants more powers. We spoke to the Director for Municipal Audit Reports at the South African Local Government Association Mohammed Logart and Deputy Minister of the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Andries Nel.
