Remembering Ken Saro-Wiwa

It was on this day (10 Nov 1995) 25 years ago when nine members of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People were executed by the then Nigerian military government of General Sani Abacha. Ken Saro-Wiwa who was a playwright and author together with his comrades were convicted on what is said to be trumped-up charges by a secret military tribunal on October 31. They came into conflict with the military dictatorship and the giant oil monopolies which bankrolled its operations as they were fighting against oil pollution caused by the multinationals and also calling on the Ogoni people to benefit directly from the oil exploits on their land. Let’s listen to one of his speeches before he was executed….
