The National Prosecuting Authority says warrants of arrests have been issued for more suspects in the 1.2 billion rand tender fraud case in the Gauteng Health Department. Four former senior government officials were granted bail in the Palm Ridge Magistrates court, east of Johannesburg today after being arrested for alleged tender irregularities believed to have taken place at the Department in 2007. Sybil Ngcobo, former head of department, Mmakgosi Mosupi, former Chief Director of Information and Communications Technology, Valdis Romaano, former Director of Supply Chain Management, and Obakeng Mookeletsi, a Deputy Director General, appeared on charges of corruption and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act. They allegedly received kickbacks after awarding a massive contract to a private company. Ngcobo was granted 8-thousand rand bail, while the rest were granted 25-thousand rand bail each. (there are 8 accused which includes 2 companies. When those deviations were made. The award was not supposed to have gone through given the fact that the MEC of finance at the time had indicated that this contract of 1.2 billion could not be awarded because there were no funds for it. however, the officials that appeared in court today, they then went ahead to sign contract service agreement against instructions not to proceed.
