A new article published by Selvan Naidoo - the curator of Durban's 1860 Heritage Centre - looks back at the colonial system of indenture, which was often compared to "Hell on Earth". Naidoo recalls the men slogging in the burning sun of the cane fields, while women often became victims of sexual abuse. The article forms part of this year's milestone commemoration and is available on the Heritage Centre's Facebook page.
