#PODCAST: Dis-Chem Pharmacy fined by the Competition Commission for inflating the prices of surgical masks

By Newsbreak Producer Tashlan Naidoo - Dischem Pharmacies increased the prices of certain facemasks in their stores by as much as 251% during the lockdown in South Africa and were subsequently fined R1.2 million by the Competition Tribunal. The case was referred to the tribunal by the Competition Commission in April, after receiving complaints from the public about excessive pricing for surgical masks. Dischem CEO Ivan Saltzman says the company will be taking the matter on appeal to the Competition Appeal Court - as the decision seems to contain a number of errors of fact and law. He says the Tribunal failed to take into consideration that they were reacting to significant price increases and shortages from the company's suppliers.
