Initial Reports stated that the Covid-19 Epidemic Puts at risk 6.6 million jobs at risk. Given the lockdown, the vast majority are unable to pay their rent, utilities, and employees. Initial surveys indicate that 60% of SMEs are either considering retrenching employees, or already have. This is a significant threat to the South African economy, with many millions of jobs at risk. Certain industries returned to work yesterday from agriculture, manufacturing, construction and financial services.
