Slavery still exists

Yesterday was International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. And you may ask yourself: “How do we have slavery in the year 2019?” Well, the sad truth is that we do. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), there are more than forty million people in the world who are victims of modern slavery. This means that people today find themselves stuck in situations of forced marriage, human trafficking, forced labour and debt bondage, amongst other form of modern slavery. According to ILO while there are 5,4 victims of modern slavery for every 1, 000 people worldwide, there are 1 in 4 children who are victims of slavery.
To talk us through the phenomenon of modern slavery we are joined by:

• Grizelda Grootboom, author of the book Exit and survivor of human trafficking
• Advocat Sabelo Sibanda founder of African Awareness and Ama-Africaaqotho
• Bianca Kinsley working at S-Cape; a safe home for women who have been trafficked and exploited
