5 Jun South African Public Protector

South Africa’s National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise is seeking legal advice on how to take appropriate action pertaining to
a request made by the Democratic Alliance to have Parliament initiate proceedings to consider the removal of the Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane. In her latest report, the Public Protector found that the Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan had violated the Constitution when he granted former SARS Deputy Commissioner Ivan Pillay early retirement with full benefits in 2010. Gordhan has since filed a review application in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria seeking to have the report's findings set aside. Meanwhile, some sectors of society have called for Mkhwebane to resign while some political parties such as the African National Congress and the Economic Freedom Fighters have expressed their support for Mkhwebane.
