My son will have a more illustrious career than mine – Sidwell Maboe

In his heydays, Sidwell Maboe set the scene alight at Bloemfontein Celtic, Orlando Pirates and Supersport United and now two decades later he is watching his son Lebohang Maboe mesmerizing the PSL with his slick moves and sensational goals. And while football has its own fair share of ambitious offsprings who often fail dismally to emulate their famous fathers, Maboe senior is confident his son is destined for a far more illustrious career than his. As destiny would have it, some 20 years after Sidwell played under Pitso Mosimane when he was assistant coach at SuperSport United, Lebo finds himself under the mentorship of the same man at The Brazilians today. Since arriving at Chloorkop from Maritzburg United at the start of the season, Maboe junior has lived up to expectations and currently leads the scoring chart at Sundowns, scoring 8 goals along with five assists as well as engraving his name in Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter’s heart. His father feels he has done enough to be a contender for the PSL Footballer of the Season Award. Sidwell, who like his son‚ was a forward with an eye for goal, had Lebo in 1994 whilst playing for Celtic at the time. At the tender age of eight, he says he realised his son had strong football blood and immediately embarked on what has since become a fulfilling journey by taking him for trials at a few local sides in Mpumalanga.
