Jantjie welcomed me at Mbombela United with open arms - Maboe
On Monday South Africa woke up to the shocking news of the passing of Free State Stars midfielder Sinethemba Jantjie. Jantjie passed away in a fatal car accident in Bethlehem in the early hours of Monday morning. Jantjie’s death left his former Mbombela United teammate Lebohang Maboe devasted to the core. Maboe, now with Mamelodi Sundowns, pours his heart out as he fondly remembers the speedy winger. 30 year old Jantjie played in 20 of Free State Stars’ 24 league games this season and scored four goals. Overall, Jantjie made 76 appearances across all PSL competitions between 2016 and 2019. He scored eight goals and registered seven assists in the process. In January, Jantjie signed a pre-contract with Bidvest Wits and was set to join his new teammates on the 1st of July 1, a move Maboe feels would have elevated the fallen star’s career to greater heights. Jantjie was instrumental in helping Mbombela United win promotion from the ABC Motsepe League to the NFD in July 2015 and was equally key for Ea Lla Koto when they won the Nedbank Cup title in May 2018 - their first major piece of silverware since 1994.
