12 Feb Venezuela

Today it has been reported that the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will intervene with the political situation in Venezuela by meeting the country’s foreign minister last week. This comes after the country has experienced multiple protests in the past weeks calling for the removal of President Nicolas Maduro. Already, the opposition leader Juan Guaido has declared himself as president with the support of fifty countries including the United States supporting him. Firstly, earlier I spoke to Mr Aziz Pahad, former South African Deputy minister of foreign Affairs.

Today we ask why does the country find itself in this situation and where to from here. We are joined in our show by:
• Henning Suhr, South Africa Director of the Konrad Adenaer Foundation (Studio)

• Dr Shingai Mutizwa Mangiza, post-doctoral fellow at the department of political studies at the University of the Western Cape

• Dr Thomas F. Purcell, senior lecturer in International Political Economy at the Leeds Beckett University
