6 Feb 32nd Ordinary Summit of the African Union

The African Union will hold its 32nd Ordinary Summit in Addis Ababa as Egypt assumes the post of Presidency of the continental body. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi takes over the leadership of the African Union, while he has been criticised for a bad human rights record in his country. However, Egypt has styled itself as the champion to improve intra-African trade and to restructure economic reforms on the African continent. The 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) will take place next week, under the theme “Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa”. Many issues are expected to be brought to the forefront such as conflict issues, economic integration and the reformation of AU instruments.

To assist us on this we are joined by:

• Babatunde Fagbayibo, associate professor of international law at the University of South Africa.
• Frank Mattheis, senior researcher at the centre for governance innovation at the University of Pretoria
