World Cities Day and South African cities in trouble

The 31st of October marked World Cities Day and South African cities are said to be in trouble, facing a financial and infrastructure crisis which further perpetuates the inequalities of broader society. This is according to the 2018 State of the Cities Report, released earlier this week by the South African Cities Network. As it stands, electricity tariffs, along with increasing municipal charges, have had a much tougher impact on poor people, who spend a great portion of their income on such services.
