The Sharks are 2018 Currie Cup Champs after win in Cape Town
The Sharks are the 2018 Currie Cup champions after beating Western Province 17-12 at Newlands Rugby Stadium on Saturday afternoon. SP Marais had put Province 6-0 up at halftime thanks to two penalties, but the visitors came back strongly in the second half and scored two tries, the first through hooker Akker van der Merwe, and the second from Tyler Paul. Rob Du Preez converted both tries, while he also scored a penalty. Province’s 6 points in the second half came via another Marais penalty, and one from Damian Willemse. Sharks coach Robert Du Preez says all the credit must go to his players. Despite being down half time Sharks co-captain Chilliboy Ralepelle says he always had the belief they could come back and win. Province coach John Dobson says the Sharks were deserved winners on the day, and this was easily his team’s worst performance of the season.
