A Human Rights Watch 2018 report on Egypt highlights vast human rights violations, malfunctioning governance and the violation of freedom of religion. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi maintained zero tolerance policy towards dissent, introducing repressive legislation that may end independent associations, reinstating a state of emergency and continuing near-absolute impunity for abuses by security forces under the pretext of fighting terrorism.
