On the Forum@8 this morning, we focus on what has emerged as a serious problem within the Police Services. The South African Police Service, Saps, briefed Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police last week, on its turnaround strategy. A number of serious issues emerged during the briefing, including that some police officers cannot read or write. SAPS officials said functional illiteracy is a problem, and that they want a study to determine the magnitude of the problem. The portfolio committee called for a strategy that must address basic policing issues like proper equipment, officers taking proper statements and the carrying of pocket books.
