2 Oct Tourism and Crime is South Africa

Tourism is a booming industry with countries namely South Africa and those in the SADC region making large profits from it. It is also a source of life for many families whose lives are sustained by tourists. However, crime like any other social ill has the potential to crush this industry as well as many people’s dreams. One case in mind is the recent robbery of 36 Dutch tourists who were from OR Tambo International Airport on the way to their accommodation. They were held up, robbed of all their belongings including cell phones, passports and luggage. The Dutch ambassador to South Africa, Marisa Gerards, was quoted as saying the tourists had booked an organised trip instead of striking out on their own because they had safety worries. South Africa is popular among Dutch tourists, according to Stats SA, the Netherlands ranked ninth on the list of countries of tourists visiting South Africa in mid-2017.
