The mental health of pregnant mothers in South Africa can be adversely affected due to food insecurity. The Perinatal Mental Health Project (PMHP) have conducted a study in an improvised community in Cape Town which has found that food insecure pregnant mothers become highly susceptible to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Director of PMHP Dr. Simone Honikman discusses the extent of their research, its findings and most importantly how policy makers begin to rethink social welfare and healthcare for pregnant mothers in the country.
