South Africa is once again engulfed by service delivery protests. Police have been on high alert in areas such as Vuwani in Limpopo, Coligny and Lichtenburg in the North West and Eldorado Park in Gauteng. Executive Director at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), Nomfundo Mogapi, says protest actions are a last resort by frustrated communities who are trying to get the attention of those in power. According to a Municipal IQ report released in February this year, service delivery protests in 2016 were the lowest since 2011, but were characterised by violence.
