Is proposed regulation of Over-The Top (OTT) service a barrier to innovation?
Mobile Operators in South Africa have viewed 'over-the-top' (OTT) services as a threat to their business models. Vodacom and MTN are complaining that the OTT's, like Whatsapp; Viber; and others, are steadily eating into their profit margins. The OTT's are provided by other companies and generally cost nothing to use, beyond ordinary data usage charges. Now the two major industry players are calling for regulation.
