EP99: The Doc and Guru & Kaalgat Karel – Streaking to success. H’gat ons!

--:--
In 1980 Jamie Uys said The god’s must be crazy but this week in The Doc and The Guru podcast we posed the same question to renowned local film director Meg Rickards and screenplay writer and producer Paul Egan about the release of their latest movie Kaalgat Karel onto the local cinema circuit.

You just made a movie despite everything that’s happened around Covid ?
Meg and Paul have produced, written and directed a number of ground breaking local documentaries including the much talked-about documentary 1994: The bloody miracle. A countdown to South Africa's first democratic elections the widely screened documentary won the Audience Award at the Durban International Film Festival, as well as the Writers' Guild award for Best Documentary Script.

Meg's directorial debut fiction feature Tess was released theatrically in South Africa in 2017 and won a number of awards, including the Best South African Film, Best Editing and Best Actress awards at the Durban International Film Festival. As well as Best Cinematography at the Silwerskermfees.

In this latest touching and amusing movie release Kaalgat Karel is portrayed as - A hapless streaker, seeking to win the heart of a strait-laced single mom, who must find a way to bear his soul rather than his buttocks.
Which means he is instantly recognizable as any one of a number of characters from the Mad Men era of advertising in South Africa. Is the Guru one of them? Did a nude scrum really spillover into West Street in Durban?
In a media landscape increasingly dominated by digital streaming and VOD, is there a future for locally produced movies and even cinema as a medium? What role can advertisers play to help stimulate local creative movie content? Do you have to be a renegade to engage in renegade marketing?

Find out in this episode of the DocAndGuruPodcast as we chat about what it takes to write, produce and direct a movie in South Africa. Better still! Go see the movie Kaalgat Karel and decide for yourself.
