Introduction to Enhanced People’s Housing Process (ePHP)

With home being an essential place of safety during the Covid-19 pandemic, we are continuing our series exploring South Africa’s affordable housing programmes and broader land debates with housing activist NGO Ndifuna Ukwazi. Many of us are familiar with the RDP housing programme, which is now actually called the BNG or Breaking New Ground programme, and we may have heard about Social Housing. But what other programmes exist to provide state assistance to citizens who cannot yet fully afford housing on the open market? How do people access these options and how have the programmes worked out on the ground so far? And what changes in the political context are currently influencing our right to access land and housing on an equitable basis? We are trying to answer these questions.
