Recently, a Durban man received a threatening message from an unknown person demanding a "time-waster's fee" of R5,000 after he chatted to a woman over whatsapp - then declined her services. The victim confirmed that he was chatting to a women who offered to send nude pictures of herself for R500. The conversation started on Facebook then moved to whatsapp where the suspect told the victim she would also send a video for R800. After transferring the money via eWallet the suspect forwarded the pictures and video to the victim. However, when the victim declined the offer from another woman, his life was threatened. Director of Reaction Unit South Africa, Prem Balram, says in these situations the victims are often too embarrassed to open up a charge of blackmail at the police station...
