#PODCAST: A humble and passionate stalwart - tributes pour in for the late Charm Govender

By Newsbreak Producer Tashlan Naidoo - The funeral service of the late anti-apartheid activist and struggle stalwart Charm Govender is currently underway at the Kharwastan Civic Hall at Chatsworth, south of Durban. Govender, who is the husband of member of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature - Maggie Govender - passed away on Monday at the age of 59. Govender began his activism as a student at the University of Durban Westville, now UKZN. He was arrested and detained under the state of emergency in 1986, during which he was shot and sustained a fractured knee while trying to escape. After the 1994 elections, Govender was honoured with a medal for his service by then President Nelson Mandela. Member of the ANC and friend, Ravi Pillay, says in spite of his many achievements, Govender remained humble....
