On this week’s episode of The DOC & The GURU Podcast, we chat to another one of SA’s Marketing Rising Stars, Robyn Hobson, the Brand Custodian at Mobile Guardian where she is responsible for both marketing and sales. We discuss the important work that Mobile Guardian is doing, as a global company focused on improving education through technology, and how this is paving the way for the future of learning with ‘classroom to cloud’.

In another very interesting podcast, we examine her career and how she started out as a blogger to working at a tech start-up, from managing digital media for some really big clients from her lounge to leading a social media team and working on large-scale 360-degree campaigns, to returning to the classroom to do her MBA, and now being part of the leadership team at Mobile Guardian.

Robyn also talks about how marketing and sales should be closer, the importance of getting the buy-in from different people in projects, to recognising and appreciating that there are alternative ways of working and she offers some really great advice to young marketers out there - always stay curious.

EP72: Zero Ratings & the 6 Prawn Theory - Kelvin Storie

There is no terrain on the traditional media landscape that has been more scrutinized than TV expenditure. Every cent. Every spot. Every rating point has to be accounted for. TV post campaign analysis has virtually created the twilight zone that is media auditing.

So what happens when you buy a spot that appears to have no audience?
In this episode of The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with Kelvin Storie – Principal: Media Strategy & Insights DSTV Media Sales about the crucial issue of Zero Ratings (ZR).

DSTV Media Sales recently hosted a live industry webinar to outline the scale of the issue and to address some of the contributing factors and planned solutions. In this episode Kelvin Storie unpacks some of the key issues arising from that webinar.

What is a Zero Rating? Does a ZR automatically imply a lower audience? Is it a technical issue or does it simply reflect the reality of streaming and video consumption on other platforms? Is this a global phenomenon and how do we compare against global norms? Are we outliers or just on a different point of the path being travelled by other countries?

Listen in and subscribe free to The Doc and The Guru Podcast and find out how to apply the 6 Prawn Theory to your #media and TV planning today.

EP71: Founder of the boutique media agency Magnetic Connection and co-founder of G2 Connection - Virginia Hollis

When it comes to TV sponsorship the TV viewer’s no fool. She’s your wife.

Should James Bond drive a Toyota? Is Heineken Zero really a beer? Is it okay to pinch someone’s bum on Clubhouse? All this and more on the Doc and Guru podcast this week.

In this episode of the Doc and The Guru podcast we chat with Virginia Hollis. The founder of the boutique media agency Magnetic Connection and co-founder of G2 Connection, an agency which specialises in providing clients with curated content and sponsored brand integration into TV shows.

Mzansi’s First Lady of Media answers some of our questions and concerns about sponsored content on TV. Is TV sponsorship still a soft media option or can it be used to drive measurable outcomes? Well it seems like shoppable media and TV sponsorship are not mutually exclusive after all.
So listen in and subscribe #free as we talk about the sponsorship principle Buy Small and Leverage Big and the need to ensure that your branded sponsorship is written into the script and creative narrative right from the start.

You might be able to get James Bond to drive a Toyota but remember - the TV viewer’s no fool. She’s your wife. With apologies to David Ogilvy.

EP70: You can take the Man out of the Media but you can't take the Media out of the Man - Mike Leahy

In wild rollicking ride across the media landscape from the brothels of Pompei to the darkest corners of Awkward Park, we unpack the latest trends in media inflation and reveal some of the darkest secrets of SABC TV buying in the 70s.

Was Churchill right? The longer we look back the further you can look forward. No better person to answer this question than the guest on this episode of The Doc and The Guru Podcast Mike Leahy. A dyed in the wool media guru in his own right Mike Leahy has filled some seriously big chairs in the media industry over the past 4 decades.

Mike Leahy is founder and CEO of Media Manager which was the first online media rates database in South Africa. And in this episode he unpacks some of the media investment and inflation trends in Mzansi from the latest Media Inflation Watch report.

Has media priced itself out of the game? Is there a future for Cinema and Print?

And that whatever media trends we see happening in media through Media Inflation Watch are really just the symptoms, not the cause.

EP68: Creatrix and Wanda B Lazarus - Storytellers to the Stars

Are you all sitty comftybold two square on your botty? Then I'll begin!

Now of course all you woke music aficionados will recognise this as the intro line to the story of Happiness Stan from the iconic 1968 album Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake. More than that though, it’s also the proper way to start telling a story.

And why not! Because this week on The Doc and The Guru podcast we are joined by two masters (or is that mistresses?) of the oral traditional. Story tellers Lynn Joffe and Thandi Ngwenya from the agency Creatrix. Both strong believers that brands need to go beyond hard sell commercial messaging and become part of the broader conversation, they also buy into the power of the oral tradition to generate positive change.

If you want to learn about a culture, listen to the stories. If you want to change a culture change the stories. Michael Margolis – CEO Storied
But it’s not just about using indigenous language on ALS radio though. It’s also about cultural nuance and expression. Strong believers in the power of broadening the narrative The Creatrix team has explored all facets of the oral traditional as a creative device. Music. Industrial theatre. Even children’s books.

But wait there’s more!

Listen in #free to #TheDocAndTheGuru podcast this week - available on all your favourite podcast platforms – and we’ll throw in a bonus live appearance from Wanda B. as she talks about her the story of her life in her recently published novel The Gospel According to Wanda B. Lazarus.
What’s going on with Wanda B. and Stephen Fry you ask? Well now! That would be a story worth telling a story wouldn’t it.

EP67: Marketing Research Foundation: Johan Koster - Mapping out the future of marketing with MAPS

For some #marketers #advertisers and #media strategists in Mzansi the demise of AMPS in 2015 is viewed as the end of the world. For others it signals the start of a Brave New World. Either way the reality is that the post-AMPS media and #research landscape consists of a range of databases, each one representing a distinctively shaped piece in the holistic #marketing and media jigsaw puzzle.

Today on The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with Marketing Research Foundation CEO Johan Koster about the launch of the Marketing All Product Survey (MAPS). Five years in the melting pot MAPS – often erroneously referred to as the replacement for AMPS - was released to subscribers last week.

Now all interested parties in the industry are invited to attend the launch of MAPS on 25th March. Just click on this link and you’ll make the synch.

MRF MAPS LAUNCH 25 MARCH 10H00

The new MRF MAPS will provide insights on products and brands, intermedia comparisons and a host of other consumer behaviour measures. The MAPS questionnaire has been modernised and reengineered to marketers’ current needs, making it a big step-up and in many instances even a step-away from AMPS.

For an insight into the fieldwork conducted between July and December listen in The Doc and The Guru in conversation with Plus94 CEO Sifiso Falala earlier this year.

A subscription-funded research survey and database MAPS is managed by the MRF and is funded and controlled by marketers under the auspices of The Marketing Association SA. This funding model allows subscribers input into the scope and content of the research and all parties interested in subscribing to MAPS should contact the MRF for relevant details.

So, join us #free on The Doc and The Guru Podcast and as we map out the future with MAPS.

EP66: BRC and Ipsos - RAMS 2021: Ditching the Diary

On this episode of The Doc and The Guru podcast Broadcast Research Council CEO Gary Whitaker explains how the new Radio Audience Measurement Survey (RAMS) will ensure audio and radio listening measurement will be made Future Ready in 2021.

For the past few years the quarterly release of RAMS listenership figures has been about as interesting and immovable as Margaret Thatcher’s hairdo. But all that is set to change when the Broadcast Research Council (BRC) releases the new RAMS audience data later this year.

Join us on the Doc and Guru Podcast as we chat with BRC CEO Gary Whitaker about the recent appointment of Ipsos to roll out the new RAMS research.

In the past RAMS was solely based on an initial face-to-face interview (CAPI method) and a manual 7-day listening diary. But the new RAMS data collection process is set to do the unthinkable.

DITCH THE DIARY

The new methodology will be based on a Computer-Aided Telephonic Interview (CATI method) which will be conducted monthly (n=36 000 on a rolling 12-month basis) and a parallel Ipsos MediaCell Passive Listening Panel which will track real time linear broadcast and digital audio consumption of 4,000 panellists each weekly.

This episode comes with a #SpoilerAlert. If you were hoping to trend your listenership figures from BRC_RAMS 2020 think again.
Spoiler Alert - When it comes to radio audience measurement 2021 is Year_1. You just have to push the reset button.

If you don’t know your CATI from your CAPI listen in #free to this episode of Doc and The Guru Podcast. Subscribe #free. We’re available on all your favourite podcast listening platforms.

EP64: Marketer of the Year Finalist - Bernice Samuels (MTN)

In the 4th episode of our 5-part mini-series on the Marketer of the Year Finalists at this year’s Marketing Achievement Awards, we chat with Bernice Samuels, the Group Marketing Executive at MTN. So listen in to hear from the Best of the Best as we cover a range of interesting topics.

Amongst other things, we chat about her marketing approach as being deliberate, disciplined and strategic, where she elaborates to say that; many marketers lack that, there is not enough focus on the customer, marketing is more than just advertising and that marketers need to better-understand the other important aspects like pricing, product development, sales channels etc. and that subsequently the profession is losing its integrity.

We also discuss one of the biggest and most important projects of 2020; creating and launching the ‘WearItForMe’ mask campaign for MTN Group in 41 languages across 20 countries, simultaneously across all media channels - all during lockdown.
