Civic Engagement

In the final episode of our governance series, the contributors discuss "civic engagement". We address the apparent disconnect between policy makers and citizens, and explore what both sides can do to open and improve the lines of communication between them. We discuss how a legal framework for public input is necessary but not sufficient, and identify positive examples of public consultation. Most importantly, we distinguish between procedural and substantive democracy.

Civil Freedoms

Episode 3 of our Governance series podcast covers freedoms of expression, media and association. We look at the colonial legacy of laws in policing and public order, and put forward suggestions for effective organisation and mobilising in somewhat closed environments.

Checks and Balances

In the second episode of our Governance series podcast, we discuss 'Checks and Balances' in African governments. We unpack the trend of power concentrating in presidencies, and look at the implications for the separation of powers and public accountability. We discuss what can be done to move toward independent and inclusive institutions.

In our first Governance series podcast episode we discuss 'Elections' on the African continent, in this conversation we critically examine current systems and approaches to elections, as well as take a forward looking approach where we consider alternatives and modifactions to current systems.
