Episode 9 - John Walland

John Walland became a radio personality in 1989 when he joined as a freelance presenter at 5FM. After 14 years at the SABC, he decided to start his next chapter at 94.7 Highveld Stereo. There he became the quintessential SPORTS GUY. We catch up with him fresh off of his win for Best Sports Show at the Liberty Radio Awards 2018 for a show on Hot91.9FM called 'Hot Sports'. Episode 8 - Greg and Lucky

The dynamic duo that is Greg and Lucky join us on the Essentials this week. We catch up with them a couple weeks after they were awarded the drive time slot on Johannesburg's finest radio station 947. Greg and Lucky are the perfect example of how teamwork makes the dream work. The two became best friends at 947 and are now inseparable radio personalities entertaining listeners as they drive home. Episode 7 - Brad Brown

Will podcasting eclipse radio in South Africa? Brad Brown seems to think so. Brad is a radio sports show host, a podcaster, and media house entrepreneur. He has two decades of radio experience. Graduating from campus radio to commercial radio, Brad cut his teeth on Highveld Stereo, eventually moving on to SAfm where he has been ever since. He is also pioneering the way forward for South African podcasting; encouraging all content creators in South Africa to not delay and start a podcast. We chat with him with how you can get started up with your podcast, and how it will factor in to the future of broadcasting in South Africa.

Episode 6 - Damon Kalvari

Damon Kalvari, unleashed and unfiltered. In this episode of the Essentials, Damon gives us his perspective on the past, present, and future of radio. Damon started working in radio, first at 702 in 1994. He left 702 ten years later, in November 2004 to join Gareth Cliff at 5FM, initially on the afternoon drive show and then the morning show. Damon again followed Gareth Cliff to his new venture internet radio station, CliffCentral. Find out what he is doing now in this episode of the Essentials.

Episode 5 - Dewald Noel

Dewald Noel has done it all. He started his radio career on TuksFM 107.2, a station that he would one day return to and lead. A stint on Jacaranda FM saw Dewald hosting a show, and filling a role as content producer on the Martin Bester Drive. He returned to TuksFM as programming manager and eventually leveled up to station manager. He has subsequently moved on and started working with The Media Connection. This episode of the Essentials recounts some of Dewald's history but also picks his brain for how current and future radio broadcasting should sound.

Episode 3 - Mark Pilgrim

Mark Pilgrim is a well known radio and television personality in South Africa.

He joined 5FM back in 1995. After 9 years he then moved onto 94.7 Highveld Stereo in Johannesburg, later, in October 2007 Mark made radio history in South Africa, by hosting the first chart show to be broadcast on 2 radio stations simultaneously, on both 94.7 Highveld Stereo and 94.5 KFM. Then in 2014 he joined a Johannesburg station Hot 919fm.

He is also well known for being a part of TV shows such as Big Brother South Africa, Big Brother Africa, Retail Therapy and the Power of 10 on MNET. To name but a few. He is also a voice artist, and spends a lot of his working day in post production studios, narrating radio and TV commercials. He is also a motivational speaker, sharing his story on testicular cancer, how he overcame it and how it pushed him to follow his dreams.

Episode 2 - Jeremy Mansfield

We all recognise his iconic voice from The Rude Awakening, which he hosted on 947 for 13 years. He is also renowned for his charity work and at the last count had raised over R20 million for charity. With over 25 years of experience in television and radio, Jeremy Mansfield now consults to media agencies and corporates and was very involved with the LeadSA campaign and continues with various multiple CSI projects, including a children's feeding scheme. He is a sought after speaker and MC.

This week on The Essentials, Tayla and Quintus talk to Jeremy Mansfield about the Past, Present and Future of broadcasting in South Africa.
