A fun morning mass participation karaoke turned into a competition that made dreams come true. Each morning, listeners would choose a song, then as it played on the radio, thousands of people would sing along and record themselves on Whatsapp. Dan Corder would pick the best and funniest to play out in real time. After the feature discovered some serious talent, a top 10 was chosen, and competed in a finals evening. The winner got to record and original song with established artists that was played on the radio.
Dan Corder pioneered a talent discovery campaign where any artist with original music who was unsigned could submit their tracks to the show. Each week, Dan played new songs from unknown musicians on air, and interviewed them too. The campaign was picked up by national weekday morning television, and culminated in a live concert of discovered artists at the iconic V & A Waterfront.
S1mba joins Dan Corder to discuss getting famous during a pandemic, the power of TikTok, and how his upbringing in Zimbabwe and England shaped the artist he is today.
