VOC speaks to Flemming Rose
--:--
To his detractors, he is a bigoted Islamophobe, stirring up racial and religious hatred against an already embattled minority. To his defenders, he is a brave and unflinching advocate of free speech. And to others (extremists), he has committed blasphemy. The man we are talking about is controversial Danish editor, Flemming Rose.
During his tenure as culture editor of the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, Rose was principally responsible for the September 2005 publication of the cartoons that initiated the Muhammad cartoons controversy in early 2006. Since then, he has been an international advocate for freedom of speech and is the author of several books, including The Tyranny of Silence that the Economist in 2014 named one of the 10 best non-fiction books of the year. In 2016, Rose was awarded the prestigious Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty. He is currently a senior fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington D.C
At the moment, he is in Cape Town and will deliver a talk tonight on the topic Free Speech in a Globalised World. It’s being hosted by the South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR) at the The River Club, Cape Town.
VOC's Shafiq Morton chatted to Flemming Rose.
