Modern day slavery remains rife in Africa, with 4 countries on the continent ranking among the top ten with the highest estimated prevalence of slavery by population. According to the 2014 Global Slavery Index, an estimated 36 million men, women and children around the world are trapped in modern slavery today, generating some 32 billion dollars for traffickers each year, nearly 80 percent from forced labour and the remaining from sexual exploitation. While the west African nation of Mauritania tops the index, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Sudan and the Central African Republic also rank under the top 10. Another west African country - GHANA - was ranked 21 among the 167 countries surveyed globally: the Index reveals that some 200-thousand Ghanaians are living as modern slaves. Channel Africa's Jenine Coetzer recently met a former child-slave who worked in the fishing sector on Ghana's Lake Volta, who is now dedicated to saving children who fell prey to the same childhood he had:
